What is Acne?
Acne is an inflammation of the so-called hair follicle, a root located at the base of each hair. This inflammation is caused by a mechanism now well identified by the researchers: the sebaceous glands responsible for the production of sebum (intended to protect the skin by preventing its drying out) secrete an excessive amount of it, which has the consequence of clogging the hair follicle, thus promoting the proliferation of bacteria and therefore an infection of the follicle which results in the appearance of pimples. Acne, and therefore excess sebum production, can be caused by many elements and in the first place by the surge of male hormones at the time of adolescence, hormones that are both present in men and women. A genetic predisposition to this condition has also been shown. Other studies finally indicate that acne can be promoted by stress and an unbalanced diet.
What Are the Treatments to Cope with Acne?
There are currently very many treatments that help get rid of acne and can be classified into two categories, namely local and oral treatments.
The first consists of applying a cream, gel or lotion directly to the skin. There are antiseptics (benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid...), local antibiotics intended to disinfect by acting directly on bacteria and retinoids that will open the hair follicle so that excess sebum can escape. Oral treatments mainly concern important to severe acne with also the use of antibiotics and retinoids but by taking tablets. The prescription of the pill to re-balance hormones and decrease acne is yet another resort.
In any case, whether it is juvenile acne or acne in adulthood, it will be necessary to arm ourselves with patience because they are long-term treatments that can not reduce or eliminate acne overnight, but rather in a few weeks to a few months. A person with acne problems should also not hesitate to consult a doctor in case of psychological suffering and if the solutions sold freely in pharmacies are not enough.
A Few Small Daily Gestures to Defeat Acne
Apart from treatments, a person with acne can take small gestures that promote the alleviation and disappearance of acne. The first reflex is to gently perform a daily facial wash with a skin-friendly surgras soap. It is then strongly advised not to abuse – and therefore not to try to break through! - a pimple that makes its appearance at the risk of spreading the infection over the rest of the affected area. It is better to apply antiseptic lotion by tampons. It is finally better to avoid the sun which has the effect of accentuating acne and go gently on the makeup, and in particular the foundation which can for its part clog the pores of the skin and therefore aggravate the infection.
